Courier Journal dishes good on the Louisville Arcade Expo!

0

Quick update today, as I’m still working on a few other posts – our own local Courier Journal posted a very in-depth and positive article on the Louisville Arcade Expo and the three guys ‘behind-the-scenes’ making it all happen.

It’s a great read and well-worth checking out!

Louisville Arcade Expo 2011!

5

Mark your calendar – March 4-6, 2011 – www.arcaderx.com.

I’ve never known Louisville to host such an event, so I’m super-stoked that the arcade preservation/collection/playing hobby is gaining some local coverage.  I’m definitely going to be attending with camera in hand to capture everything that is going on at the expo.  I hope to run into some friends and local collectors and get some play time in as well.

Looks like they’re setting up for a pinball tournament, hosting a lot of classic consoles, and are also allowing people to bring games to sell, which is a nice perk.  It is sometimes (very) hard to get a good audience of potential buyers for a specific game, so this could be a good opportunity to price something to move.  If you bring a game and set it on free play, then admission is free for the day as well.  That’s a pretty sweet deal, but I doubt I’ll want to haul a game out of the basement and back… it takes a lot for me to want to yank something out once it finds its place… LOL.

Post up if you’re planning on attending and what day you might be thinking about going.  It’d be cool for some fellow collectors/appreciators to meet up, if possible.

Game on!

Zanzabar is a ‘KY treat’!

zanzabartopshotA good arcade (especially in KY) is hard to come by nowadays, so when I was invited down to check out Zanzabar I was excited to see what would be offered up for ‘show and play’.  I originally visited the restaurant/bar/arcade mid-summer 2010 (for the CoinOpSpace.com Louisville KY meetup) and owner Antz rolled out the red for all of us forum members to meet and greet and play some classics.  His selection at the time was good (around 10 games) with plans for continued acquisition and expansion.

I had the opportunity to revisit Zanzabar right before Christmas 2010 and was very happy to see that the game selection has come along quite nicely.  All of the games are in great working condition (with at least one hand-restored by the owner) and there is a really nice selection at this point with several rare games in the mix as well.  What’s especially neat about Antz’s collection is that he has chosen to include several cabaret and cocktail cabinets in the collection along with the usual uprights.

I’ve definitely enjoyed playing on the cabarets (I don’t have any at this time) as they have a very distinct feel to them that is different – but still as gratifying – as the uprights.  I also like the cocktail configuration games, but I just don’t have the floorspace at home for them so I’ve never played much on them as a result.

Here’s what I saw at Zanzabar’s as of my last visit:

It’s a Kong Off, baby!

This is so sweet.  I love Donkey Kong – it’s always been my favorite game, and the recent resurgence it has been receiving due to the King of Kong movie and the highly-publicized high score volleys between Steve Wiebe, Billy Mitchell and Hank Chien have just made being a DK fan all that much better.

KY/Southern IN Arcade meet up – October 3rd 2009!

0

Set the date for Saturday, October 3rd @ 2:00 PM and try to make it out to Wicks Pizza at 975 Baxter Ave in Louisville.

Over at CoinOpSpace.com, myself and fellow local collector Wayne Boyd have organized a collectors meet/greet for that Saturday.  Hopefully we’ll have a good turnout and everyone can network a little bit and meet someone new.  We’re planning on hanging at Wicks for a bit to eat/talk, and then heading down to Ed Lutz’s shop (Arcade Odyssey) for some gaming and discussion and maybe a few other activities after that wraps up.

More details are in this thread over at COSP – http://www.coinopspace.com/group/kentuckyarcadecollectors.
