84: Bless His Heart

September(ish); kinda (but not really) October 2019

Let’s start off by cabbaging a classic phrase and put a spin on it – “Podcasting finds a way…”

It’s very relevant for this show (No.. there haven’t been any Jurassic Park boxes have shown up at our houses, if that’s what you’re thinking) as we’ve had to re-work schedules quite a bit due to life finding its way.  We’ll get into all of that on ep. 85 when Whitney is back in the chair.  For now, we had to farm out co-host duties this time around to (good) friend of the show Jim Hale and we hope everyone enjoys this break from the norm!

Brent carries it all and we thank him for the commitment, otherwise there wouldn’t have been an 84 to get us to 85!

With all that being said, there’s a whole slew** of topics covered in this episode:

  • How to speak “Kentucky” (as if you still needed a lesson…we’re at 84 episodes, after all)
  • Stern drop target repair
  • Thoughts on Stern Jurassic Park and Elvira
  • “House of the Dead” monitor repair
  • Flat panel monitor power supply repair
  • Esoteric control panel art
  • “I Dream of Jeannie”, “Bewitched”, and “the Dukes of Hazzard” cast changes (and how they scarred us all)
  • The lament of Suncoast Pinball and Cosmic Carnival
  • The Pontiac Fiero and its propensity to catch fire
  • Arcade 1Up and Star Wars

83: Brent’s Front Porch

Ah August….we barely knew ye.

There’s so much that transpired this past month, it’s hard to get it all in a blog post – fortunately for us (and to everyone else’s dismay) we have 3 hours and 20 minutes to tell all you fine listeners all about it!  If the math is right, that should be about 1.7 O’Shea Commutes.  #WINNING

All joking aside, we’ve got a pretty jam-packed episode for everyone – we discuss the latest play field clear coat issues that has taken the pinball internets by storm over the past couple of weeks and dovetail that with our thoughts on Jurassic Park and Star Wars “Pin”, both announced and released from Stern over the past 30-45 days.  We also discuss a really neat offering for anyone with a Cinematronic arcade machine (Star Castle, Armor Attack!, etc.) and talk about a recent trip to Brunswick, GA where Whitney visited the “Pinball Palace” (and Planet Fun) over family vacation.  Brent gives us a good education on video and pinball optos and we respond to a challenge issued forth by our friends at Pod Casserole.  We also cover off on our monthly updates where Whitney picks up a “spare” Robotron and Brent gives us his thoughts on both Cosmic Carnival and Black Knight: Sword of Rage (spoiler: Whitney loves it, Brent doesn’t… it’s like Donkey Kong all over again).

Oh…. don’t miss Brent’s “Facebook Rant” segment this month… it was so much fun that we named the episode after it!

82: 3 False Starts…The SFGE Story

July 2019

We’re back from July travels with all kinds of great arcade and pinball talk and a few stories to boot from our time at the 2019 Southern-Fried Gaming Expo.  Not only does the Panther travel to Atlanta in Business Class (not really… it was the front seat of Brent’s car) it inspired a host of people who wanted to buy “Panther Vision” neon glasses!  I think we’ve created a cottage industry by accident…

In addition to the updates, news and (burning) spending of Brent’s money (we buy flybacks, key locks and an Asteroids multi control panel, along with some other most excellent items) we’re joined by Stern Pinball’s own Mike Vinikour, Circus Maximus’ James Loflin and the Grand Ole Gameroom Expo’s David Corrigan.

We may be travel weary this month, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t have a good time and turn up short for words!!  Heck, we even speculate on Stern’s next game (which proved itself to be a double-hitter: both Star Wars “The Pin” and Jurassic Park!!)

62: Sounds like Burl Ives!

December 2017

There’s no better way to wrap the year and send 2017 out with a bang than to wax nostalgic on why we sound absolutely NOTHING like the smooth tones of our favorite Christmas music poet from way back…Mr. Burl Ives.

TBH, we don’t really dig much into Burl Ives in this episode, but it did make for a couple good references and it is that time of year!  Instead, what you get for this last show is 2017 is a healthy heaping of reflection on the year, some current updates, some spending of the Brent’s money, some discussion on EEPROM programmers and some non-committal pinball talk about Guardians of the Galaxy and Total Nuclear Annihilation.  Oh yeah – that and we want to go see Star Wars: The Last Jedi – like really bad.

We thank everyone for their time in 2017 – we know you’ve got a choice in podcasts and we appreciate you continuing to spend your time with us!  We will try (like harder than we did this year) to continue the push above mediocrity for 2018 – onwards and upwards!!

57: They Went Straight to Plaid!

July 2017

Yep – we admit it – we go “straight to plaid” in this months’ episode.  We tried REAL HARD LIKE to not let the discussion around Stern’s new Star Wars Pinball capitalize the episode, but we couldn’t help ourselves.  We analyze it from up one side and down the other and still net a solid zero at the very end of it all.  Fortunately we have “Total Nuclear Annihilation” on the horizon and that promises to save the day – in more way than one.

So, on with what promises to be a really fun show.  We work through our monthly updates, as Brent just completed a pretty large group buyout on some killer titles (and a lot of PC10 carts, as well).  He picks up his Jurassic Park and lays in a total surprise game pickup as well. Whitney discusses the next few chapters in the Sky Skipper Project and discusses some cabinet swaps he’s got going on.

We cover off on a small soldering Q&A, review some hardware and for the first time in a few months we spend even more of Brent’s money.  All this, a “Nip-It” alert to end all alerts, and some feedback as well!
